A Minnesota native having graduated from Cloquet High School (Class of '36) and the University of Minnesota, Duluth (1940). His parents (V. Arthur Niemi and Inez Heikkila) migrated to Minnesota from Finland. Prior to World War II he taught high school music, social studies and history in both Barnum and Carlton. He served for almost four years in the United States Army during World War II, as part of the 10th Mountain Division, after which he earned his masters degree from the University of Minnesota and his doctorate from Columbia University in New York City.
For twelve years he first served as Professor of Music and was Head of the Music Department at Northern Michigan University in Marquette. While in Marquette he also directed the Northern Community Symphony Orchestra and the Municipal Band. He often worked as an adjudicator and guest conductor at high school band and orchestra festivals in the mid-west. He served as an advisor to the Blue Key, a National Honor Fraternity and was a life member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Allan was also active at the First Methodist Church in Marquette, where he sang in the church choir and was director of the children's choir.
He next served the University for twenty years as Dean of Students and as a Vice President. Upon retirement in 1981 he received a Distinguished Service Award and the title, Emeritus Vice President. In 1993 he received an Honorary Doctor of Humanities Award from his University.
He retired to Green Valley, AZ in 1981. He was a charter member of the Chamber Music Society, the Concert Band and the Stage Band. He was an active member of the Community Church Choir and served terms on the Board of Trustees and chaired the Music Committee. He was a long-time member of the Rotary Club in Marquette and in Green Valley; he served as president of the Michigan group.
Survivors include his wife Marcella (Bjerke) whom he married on March 30, 1944, 3 daughters – Ann Niemi of Menominee MI, Linda (Don) Niemi Wood of Odessa FL, and Kim Niemi of Ishpeming MI, a granddaughter Kathy (Randy) Campbell and 2 great grandchildren Kaylee and Cody Allan Campbell.
Honoring Dr. Niemi's wishes, cremation will take place and a private interment will take place at the Park Cemetery in Marquette.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to the Dr. Allan L. Niemi Scholarship Fund, through the NMU foundation at 1401 Presque Isle Avenue, Marquette, MI 49855.
