Drafted in the Spring of '69, PFC Collins arrived in Vietnam on September 18, 1969, where he was assigned to Company B, 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, in the 4th Infantry Division. On the 24th of October '69, his unit was in contact with enemy forces in Binh Dinh Province. As supporting mortar fire was being directed onto the enemy's position, one mortar round was off target and landed near several men from PFC Collins' platoon. PFC Rodney Collins was one of three who died as a result of the errant mortar round. He was killed-in-action on October 24, 1969. His awards include the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal.
