BRIGHAM CITY – Leon L. "Pete" Young, 76 passed away Sunday, October 11, 2015 with his family by his side.

Pete was born on January 4, 1939 in Brigham City, Utah a son of Ruth Berchtold and Leo T. Young and he lived in Brigham City his whole life.

He graduated from Box Elder High School, attended Snow College where he played football on a scholarship and Utah State University. He graduated from Weber State College with two Bachelors degrees in accounting and economics.

Pete married his sweetheart Kathleen Smoot in the Logan Temple on December 17, 1962. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various callings including: Ward Clerk, Stake Financial Clerk, Librarian, Primary Teacher and Executive Secretary.

Pete worked as an Air Force Contracting Officer with the Department of Defense, where he retired after more than thirty years. After retirement he worked various jobs including with the Eagle Mountain Golf Course, Brigham City Cemetery, Super Wash Car Wash and Brigham City Parks and Recreation. Throughout his career he made many life long friends.

He enjoyed sports, hunting, and fishing, he passed on his passion for the great outdoors to his son, Peter. Pete loved spending time with his family and grandkids. He spent much time at the golf course; he even lovingly tried to teach Kathy to golf with much patience and laughter. Pete knew how to spoil his wife, taking her on dinner outings and often surprising her with a dozen roses at least once a month. He was very strong, selfless and positive. Pete was a man of integrity. He tried to teach these attributes to his family through his example.

Special thanks to Dr. Lynn Beard, ShopKo Pharmacy, the personnel at McKay Dee Hospital and niece Cindy Marshall for her love, support and compassionate care of Pete and his family during his last days.

Surviving are his wife Kathleen, children: Peter (Marise) Young, Brigham City; Heidi Anderson, Willard; grandchildren: Zachary, Hunter, Tausha Young; Amanda, Megan, Cody, Casey (Kylee) Anderson; Alex Wood; Jay (Dani) Moffitt; Josh (Jess) Moffitt; Carly (Mick) Aho; two great-grandchildren: Kaydince Garza and Osyn Anderson; special nieces: Lexie and Kadie Smoot who he loved and they loved him. Also sister Ruthie (Ward) Secrist; and in-laws: Alene Thompson, Kirk (Karen) Nelsen, Rulon Smoot, Bill (Karla) Smoot, Edna (Dee) Hardy, Dave Smoot, Dick Smoot and all their families.

Preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Darwin and Lyle.

Funeral services will be Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Willows Ward Chapel, 895 N. 625 W., Brigham City, UT. Friends may call on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Myers Mortuary, 205 S. 100 E., Brigham City, UT. There will be a private family viewing only on Saturday.

Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery.
