A farmer by trade, he stood 5' 4" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of thirty-three in Chambersburg January 5, 1864, and mustered into federal service there January 8 as a private with Co. L, 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry (185th Pennsylvania). On June 24, 1865, as part of a war-end consolidation, he transferred to Co. L, 3rd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, and honorably discharged with his company October 31, 1865.

He was originally buried in Monument Cemetery and re-interred to Lawnview when Temple University built on the land.
