Hall of Fame Horse Racing Jockey. In 1952 the Kentucky Derby was broadcast on television for the first time and he rode Native Dancer to an undefeated season that year. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972 and retired in 1975 with a career that produced 2,712 winners. He died of heart complications and his ashes were spread in the flower bed in the winners circle at Gulfstream Park, Florida.
