Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. Competing for his native Cuba, he won the Gold Medal as a heavyweight boxer in three consecutive Summer Olympic Games. he won his first Gold at the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich, Germany, defeating Romania's Ion Alexe. His second Gold was won at the 1976 Summer Games in Montreal, Canada, where he defeated Mircea Șimon of Romania. Lastly, his third Gold was won at the 1980 Games in Moscow, Soviet Union, where he defeated Russia's Pyotr Zayev in the title match. He was still competing in 1984, but missed out of the Summer Games that year in Los Angeles, California when the teams from Soviet-bloc countries boycotted. He won the Gold in the 1986 World Amateur Boxing Championships, defeating American Alex Garcia. He is one of three boxers to win three Olympic Gold Medals, joining fellow Cuban Félix Savón and László Papp of Hungary.
