Johann M.O. Ness was born in 1853 in Norway and emigrated to the United States in 1872 or 1873. He became a Lutheran pastor and was also one of the founders of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. He was president of the college from 1891 through 1927. He was pastor of Nora Lutheran Church (now Perley Lutheran parish which consists of Nora Lutheran Church of Gardner, N.D. and Kirkebo Lutheran Church of Perley, MN) from 1886 to 1910.
