John Michael Sullivan passed away on Jan. 23, 2015, at Queens West Hospital in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, from a heart condition complicated by pneumonia.

John was born October 15, 1942 in a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts to Florence L. Madden Sullivan and John T. Sullivan. He was the second oldest child of six. In his youth, the family moved to Hyannis, Massachusetts. He grew up there where he married his first wife, Janice. They had two children, Kathleen, born in 1963, and Mark, born in 1969. In 1978, he moved his family from Cape Cod to the Seattle area. After his divorce he met Laura, and they were married in 1996. At the time of his death, John and Laura had been married 18 years.

John worked his whole career as a newspaper press operator, starting at the Cape Cod Times and then in Washington state at the Seattle Times, the Tacoma News Tribune, and the Olympia newspaper. In his profession, he achieved the highest status as a journeyman press operator and was active in the Graphic Communications International Union (GCIU). John regularly held fundraising lunches for new press operators. He retired in March 2005 and subsequently moved to Waianae, Hawaii in April of that year.

In retirement, John volunteered for the Waianae Youth Sailing Club and for the Waianae Boat Club. He loved cars and enjoyed fixing them. He loved to swim, camp and fish, wherever he lived. When he moved to Hawaii, he indulged his sense of adventure by swimming in the ocean, fixing up a boat, and taking journeys on his motorcycle.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter; one son; one grandson; one granddaughter; and three sisters and brother-in-laws. John was predeceased by a sister, Mary, and a brother, David.

There was a mass held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Hyannis, Massachusetts in memory of John Sullivan. The mass was held at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 12, 2015. A memorial service had also taken place in John's memory in Waianae, Hawaii on February 15, 2015.
