US Congressman. A successful businessman in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he served in the Michigan State Senate in 1855 and 1856, and as Mayor of Grand Rapids in 1854, 1865 and 1866. In 1871 he was elected as a Republican to represent Michigan’s 4th and 5th Districts in the United States House of Representatives, filling the vacant House seat following the resignation of United States Senator-elect Thomas White Ferry. He served from December 1871 until his death in office in 1873.
