Dubel funeral held Burton Community Church Saturday

Funeral services for Merle Dubel were held Saturday 01 Nov in the Burton Community Church. The Rev. J. J. Dickens of Colome officiated. Merle Dubel was born 09 April 1887 to Clara and James Dubel in Simpson, Nebraska and passed away in Norfolk, Nebraska 29 October, being 65 years, 5 months, and 20 days of age. He lived all his life in Nebraska except for a year when his family moved to Missouri and later living in South Dakota while preparing the present Dubel home. Mr. Dubel farmed with his father and then homesteaded in South Dakota in1910 and later farmed in partnership with his brother, Rolly.
He was married to Miss Emma Bahr in 1923. Three children were born to this union. Survivors besides his wife are a daughter, Alta Broadbrooks of Colome, SD; a son James in the Navy now in Japan; and a daughter Avis at home, now in McPherson, Kansas in school; a sister Zura LeHaye of White River, South Dakota; and a brother Rolly at home. Also three half-sisters, Mrs. Pearl Neff and Mrs. Winnie O'Brien in California, and Mrs. Edna Swartz of Hood River, Oregon, besides nephews and nieces and many friends.
Mr. Dubel was known for his good character, industry and neighborliness. Great sadness came to the family when he was stricken with a mental illness which kept him from his family for 19 years. So he was deprived of seeing them grow up and take their place in the world.
Merle was an example to all of us in that he stood this great trial in his life without complaint. In visits with relatives and friends he was patient and wanted no one to worry about him, acquiring of the state of old friends and neighbors.
May the death of this loved one and friend remind us of the duty we have to others, like him, who have so little while we have so much.
Pallbearers were: Will Thiede, Ed Kirsch, Ed Bammerlin, Leonard Liboldt, Herman Lewis, and Alex Donneson. Interment was in the Jordan Valley Cemetery.
