John was a native of Prussia who immigrated to the United States in 1844. On 23 Mar 1856 he married Mary Ann Hess and they had nine children: Mary E., Wilhelmina, Anna C., Sophia, Mary C., John, Henry and Frances. About 1898 he married his second wife, Anna Bush. For many years John was employed as a farmer. He died of cancer of the neck at his home, 1660 Van Buren Street, at the age of 79.
