Opera Singer. A bass-baritone noted for his performances on both sides of the Atlantic, he shall probably be better remembered as a distinguished voice teacher. Born Daniel Eisen, he was raised in New York City, graduated from the Juilliard School and Columbia University, studied at the Salzburg Mozateum on a Fulbright Scholarship, changed his name from the German word for "iron" to the Italian equivalent, and after further training in Italy moved to Austria where he joined the Graz Opera Company, among his more acclaimed roles there Truchess von Waldburg from Paul Hindemith's "Mathis der Maler" and Titurel of Wagner's "Parsifal". During his time overseas he made numerous appearances with the Israel Philharmonic, but in the early 1960s he returned to America; well known as a recital and oratorio artist, he earned credits in a number of concert presentations of operas, singing in Massenet's "Manon" at Carnegie Hall and Rossini's "William Tell" at Lincoln Center, while also appearing in a staged presentation of Gian Carlo Menotti's "The Saint of Bleeker Street", and even taking a turn on Broadway in "The King and I". Mr. Ferro also became perhaps New York's most sought-after voice teacher, numbering among his many students Rosalind Elias, Evelyn Lear, Thomas Stewart, and Kathy Battle. He received honors from at least three countries, taught at Hunter College and at the Manhattan School of Music, held a Professorship at Juilliard from 1972 until taking Emeritus status in 2006, presented master classes the world over, and from 1995 on ran the Daniel Ferro Vocal Program, a summer training venture for young singers based in Greve, Italy. At his death from the effects of advanced he could be heard on some 'live' recordings as well as on the 1964 revival album of "The King and I".
