August was a native of Baden-Wuerttemberg. He immigrated to the United States in 1869 and settled in Louisville, Kentucky. On 27 May 1879 he married Mary Gebhart and they had seven children: Phillip, Benjamin, Clara, Joseph, George, Raymond and Albert. He was employed as a butcher. August died of chronic nephritis at the age of 64.
