Roman Catholic Cardinal. Osniszczewko born Bolesław Filipiak was the eldest of seven children. Entering seminary in Poznań, he frequented the local university before heading to Rome to the Pontifical Roman Athenaeum Sant'Apollinare, earning a doctorate in utroque iure in both canon and civil laws. Ordained priest in Gniezno on May 29, 1926, he acted as secretary to the local ordinary, Cardinal August Hlond SDB. Imprisoned by the Nazis, on his release he was named member of the archdiocesan tribunal of Gniezno before being called to Rome as president of the tribunal of third instance for matrimonial causes reserved to the Holy See. Appointed auditor of the Sacred Roman Rota on September 24, 1947 and dean on June 26, 1967, he was named honorary canon of the cathedral chapters of Poznań and Gniezno and president of the Appellate Tribunal of the State of Vatican City. Pope Paul VI elected him archbishop of the titular see of Plestia on May 1, 1976, receiving his episcopal consecration on the following May 14 at the church of Sant'Anselmo all'Aventino in Rome from Cardinal Pericle Felici. Ten days later, the named Pontiff created him cardinal deacon with the deaconry of San Giovanni Bosco in Via Tiburtina. A stroke brought his end at his residence in Poznań the day the October 1978 conclave began.
