Christian was the son of Christian Sauter. He was a native of Germany who immigrated to the United States about 1872. On 22 May 1886 he married Anna Gebhart and they had five children, three of whom are known: Christian, Lorena and Marie. He was a carpenter who worked for the L&N Railroad. Christian died of accidental asphyxiation of heating gas at the age of 68.
