He won the gold medal in the Olympic decathlon in 1948 at age 17, did it again four years later, and served four terms in Congress. His life became the basis of a 1954 movie, "The Bob Mathias Story," with Mathias playing himself in the leading role. In 1983 he was enshrined in the United States Olympic Hall of Fame. He died of cancer at age 75 in Fresno, California.
