Sarah Campbell Chandler

Sarah Green(e) Campbell Chandler was a lineal descendant of Col. Robert Pitt and Col. Joseph Bridger, heads of two "First Families of Virginia" and through whom Mrs. Chandler was related to many of the old families of the South.

The first home of Daniel Chandler and Sarah Green(e) Campbell, built in 1828 at Washington, Wilkes County, Georgia, called Washington Plantation.

Macon Telegraph, October 10, 1828: "Married. In Wilkes county, on the 2d inst. by the Rev. Thomas Golding, Daniel Chandler, Esq. of Warren county, to Miss Sarah G. Campbell, eldest daughter of the late Col. D. G. Campbell."

The New Haven (Connecticut) REGISTER, Dec. 27, 1892, p.1, recounts her son William Chandler's days at Yale (class of 1849) and some interesting family details about those days: "He was a tall, handsome young man, a typical southerner, and boarded at Mrs. Lane's(Lance's?) boarding house while attending school. There are also a few old residents who either stopped at or frequented the Tontine hotel about the same period who remember Mrs. Chandler, the young man's mother. It was her custom to board at the hotel with her family during the winter while William was at school and during the summer vacation to travel about the country.
"…Her (Florence Maybrick's) case has excited a good deal of sympathy among New Haven people who knew her father, as he was a general favorite with everyone who knew him, and when here moved in the highest social circles. Both he and his mother were on intimate terms with the Sheffields, Prof. Larned, Lawyer Henry D. White's folks, and was well known by Dr. Daggett and scores of others. After graduation he went to Mobile and after a few years he went into law partnership with Judge Campbell, his uncle. He married a Kentucky lady and the couple resided in Mobile. Mr. Chandler had one brother, John, who attended Yale for three years, but did not graduate, and three sisters, Mary, Sarah, and Anna, all three of whom spent three years in this city. The last that New Haven people had heard of John Chandler he was in the Confederate army and was taken prisoner at Sumter, Ala., in 1864.
"…All the old friends of the dying woman's father are not at all backward of expressing their denunciation of the British home office and each one is sure that Mrs. Maybrick is not guilty."
