Robert “Bob” W. Hayes, loving brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2015, in Spokane, Washington, at the age of eighty-nine years, four months and eight days.
Robert was born August 12, 1926, in New Boston, Ohio, to Tivis and Laura (Wellman) Hayes.
Robert is survived by two sons, David Hayes of Spokane, Washington, and Jerry Hayes of St. Roberts, Missouri; two grandchildren, Robert and Kenya, both of Spokane, and their children, Remington, Colten, and Ashlynn Chute, and Perry Poppert. Also surviving is his brother, Lindsey Hayes of Akron, Ohio, and sisters, Betty Combs and Rose Henson, both of Circleville Ohio, as well as a number of nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and many dear friends.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Betty (Caton) Hayes; brothers, Morris and Lon, and sister, Dixie.
Bob was a World War II Navy veteran, serving as an electrician’s mate and fireman first class in the Pacific on the USS Indus, an anti-submarine net-laying vessel. After the war, Bob returned to Ohio, married the love of his life, Betty, and worked for many years as an ironworker foreman at Interlake Iron Corporation in Jackson, Ohio. He later became a federal prison correctional officer, moved to Springfield, Missouri, in 1966, and then to his final home in Fordland, Missouri, in 1967, where he served as a city council member and later as mayor pro-tem for a short time.
A devout Christian, Bob was an active member of many area churches, most recently the New Hope Chapel of Fordland. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. His kind heart, generous nature, and loving spirit were well known and respected by all.
