Joseph William Von Bokern, Sr. at the age of 93, died peacefully on Saturday, December 26, 2015 at the Episcopal Church Home.

He was born to German immigrants, Theodore Von Bokern and Marie Feldman Von Bokern. Joe grew up in the Clifton area where his parents owned and operated the “Von Bokern Bakery”.

Throughout Joe’s life, the Catholic Faith was greatly treasured. He was a member of St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church since the second grade, where he worshiped and served. He also attended St. Frances of Rome School and graduated from Ahrens Trade School.

By trade, Joe was a “sheet metal man.” In his early years, he was co-owner of Airway Sheet Metal, but later went to work at Kitchen Kompact, where he was the head maintenance foreman. There wasn’t anything that he couldn’t build or make and was always ready to help.

Joe was also a volunteer at the Society of St. Vincent DePaul and Crescent Hill Ministries.

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his loving wife of 44 years, Mary “Lib”; siblings, Betty, Lawrence, Evelyn, Francis, Theodore “Tee” and Bobby and a son-in-law, Tom Box.

On September 11, 1948 Joe married the love of his life, Lib, and together they built a life of love, raising their five children, Becky Box, Joe (Debbie), Martha Eastland (Bob), Susanne Kinnaird (Tom) and Greg. He also leaves to cherish his memory nine grandchildren, Shannon, Jamie, Jon, Jason, Tommy, Emily, Joseph, Bethany and Gregory and 18 great-grandchildren.

He resided for the last 9 years at the Episcopal Church Home. We are extremely grateful for their compassionate care given throughout his last years.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 30th at St. Francis of Rome, 2119 Payne Street with burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 29th at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road, “in St. Matthews”.
