He graduated from Midland High and following graduation joined the United States Navy. On May 11, 1957 he married the love of his life, his angel, the former Katherine Baker. He loved carpentry and that led to a 38-year career with The Dow Chemical Co. as a carpenter. After retirement he went on to work at Soaring Eagle Casino for another 15 years. Laverne was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt. Sports were another one of his passions, coaching his daughters' softball teams for many years and he was a diehard Detroit Tiger fan and faithful Lions fan to the end. He also maintained a lifelong love affair with chocolate.
Surviving to hold his memory dear are his three daughters, Cheryl (Jim), Linda (Al) and Brenda (Charles); 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Laverne was preceded in death by a daughter, three grandchildren and very recently his wife, Katherine.
Laverne was selfless and kind with a heart of gold. He never met a stranger and made friends wherever he went. He was loved dearly and will be missed greatly.
A gathering of friends and family to celebrate Laverne's life will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015 at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 West Wheeler St. with a graveside committal to follow in Homer Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
