The funeral for Vernon D. Monthye, 67, of Bismarck and formerly of Mobridge and Herreid, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge. The Rev. E. Douglas Heskin will officiate.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, with military graveside rites by Parker-Browder American Legion Post of Mobridge. Larson's Funeral Home in Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.
A prayer service will be at 7:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
He died Tuesday, March 14, 1995, at his home in Bismarck.
Vernon D. Monthye was born Dec. 22, 1927, to Ervin C. and Dorothy (Bollinger) Monthye in rural Herreid. He was baptized Feb. 26, 1928, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mound City. His confirmation took place at the same church on July 12, 1942. He was raised on a farm and attended Monthye Country School through the eighth grade. He graduated from Herreid High School in 1946. He then worked on his father's farm until he was inducted into the Army on Jan. 17, 1951. He was in Korea with the reconnaissance company of the 25th division until Oct. 16, 1952. He then was in the Army Reserve until his discharge on Dec. 18, 1956. He joined Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. of Mobridge in 1953, when he was hired as a clerk. He also worked as a warehouseman, stores ledger clerk and senior clerk.
He married Macel Ann Gay on Sept. 14, 1957, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mobridge. He was promoted to the position of chief accountant and transferred to Kenmare in 1960. IN this capacity, he transferred back to Mobridge for three years, to Jamestown for four years and then to Dickinson for three years.
In 1977, he moved back to the general office in Bismarck as director of employee relations. In the following years, he held the positions of director of compensation, human resource planning, compensation manager and finally director of human resource development. After 35 years with the company, he retired on March 1, 1988.
He was a member of the Jaycees, American Legion, Lions, Elks Lodge, Rotary and Loyal Order of Moose. He was also active in the Parent-Teacher Association and in church activities involving the American Lutheran Church, now Evangelical Lutheran Church of America where he taught Sunday school and served as church treasurer , deacon, trustee and many other committee positions.
He enjoyed camping, music, spectator sports, reunions, German foods and especially his little granddaughter.
Survivors include his wife of Bismarck; one son, Jeffrey Monthye of Bismarck; on daughter, Mrs. Leland (Susan) Scheurer of Bismarck; two brothers, Jerome Monthye of Rush City, Minn., and Ervin J. Monthye of Kalispell, Mont.; one sister, Mrs. Keith (Marilyn) Harrison of Deadwood; and one grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
