He married Betty Reed Herd in Oklahoma City on May 2, 1941 and they spent 74 wonderful years together before her passing in September. Gomer graduated from the University Of Oklahoma School Of Law in May of 1942. He also served in the US Army and later transferred to the Air Force to the Counter Intelligence Corps. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a long time Oklahoma City attorney focusing on tort law, domestic relations, criminal law, eminent domain and probate cases. He started his law career at Gomer Smith & Associates with his father and brother. Later, the firm name changed to Smith, Johns and Neuffer. In 1960, Smith and Smith was created with partner Wilbert G. Smith and in 1980, Gomer and his son-in-law Dan started Smith & Murdock. He continued practicing law until just recently. Gomer was involved with many organizations throughout his life. He was a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, Oklahoma County Bar, Oklahoma Trial Lawyers and Kiwanis Club. Not only does he join his beloved wife but also his parents and siblings, Homer Smith, Juanita Kytle, Jacqueline Roach and Jean Peterson. Services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 15, 2016 at the Resurrection Memorial Cemetery Chapel. The family would like to thank a dear friend of nearly 40 years, Mary Black, for her caregiving, compassion and dedicated support. Special thanks also to Heartland Hospice, especially Kathy and to Personal Nursing and the staff at Kendall House who took such great care of Gomer. In lieu of flowers, donations appreciated to the Oklahoma Bar Foundation, Free to Live or to the charity of your choice.
