Raised in Muncie, Indiana, he was heavily influenced by Gospel music and experienced performing in his first ensemble "The Voices of Hope", prior to returning to Mississippi, where he continued to perform in other groups. He moved to Chicago and launched his solo career with the One-derful! record label and made an immediate impression on the American R&B Charts with his single "That's How It Is (When You're In Love)" (1967) and followed this with "A Lasting Love" (1967) and his cover of the Sir Douglas Quintet hit "She's About a Mover" (1968). The later earned a Top-100 placing for Clay on the American Pop Charts. During the 1970s, Clay signed on with the Hi Records label and recorded perhaps his most successful album "Trying To Live My Life Without You" (1972) which included the single of the same title that achieved a Top-30 placing on the American R&B Charts. Bob Seger earned a Top-5 placing on the American Pop Charts with his cover version in 1981. Clay scored a further Top-50 hit in the R&B Charts with "All Because of Your Love" (1977). Over the next three decades, he made a name for himself in Europe and Asia and continued to perform until his death from a heart attack.
