Born Luis Enrique Arroyo, he marked his Major League debut with the Cardinals on April 20, 1955 and recorded 11 wins earning all-star status that year. Arroyo's best body of work was with the Yankees (1960 to 1963). In 1960, he was converted to a reliever and displayed his effective screwball pitch, as he experienced a pennant with New York. He pitched in one game during the 1960 World Series. His pinnacle of success was reached the next year (1961), as he produced 15 wins from the bullpen, with an impressive 2.19 ERA, as he led the league with 29 saves and 65 games-pitched, while contributing to the Yankees' capturing of the world championship. He achieved all-star status that season and recorded 1 win in 2 games during the 1961 World Series. In 1962, he experienced a third run at a pennant but his pitching was limited due to injuries. In 244 regular season games, he compiled a 40 win, 32 loss record with a lifetime 3.93 ERA, in 531 innings pitched. After retiring as a player, he served as a manager in the Mexican League and later was a scout with the New York Yankees. He died from cancer.
