SAMUEL ARCHIBALD (called Lame Sam) was born at East Derry, N.H. ca. 1761 and died at St. Mary’s River, Guysborough County, 20 June 1833. . He married first, 13 January 1790, MARGARET ARCHIBALD, b. at Truro 13 August 1767; d. 15 January 1809, daughter of Thomas 2 and Janet (Orr) Archibald. Lame Sam was known as Samuel Archibald 2nd and was listed among the fifty grantees in the Stewiacke grant of 1783. His lot of 500 acres lay in the middle of what became Upper Stewiacke village. The first evidence that Lame Sam was actually living at Upper Stewiacke, however, was in December 1789 when he was chosen overseer of the poor and fence viewer. At the next meeting of the proprietors of Stewiacke, held in December 1790, Lame Sam was appointed hog reeve and in 1791 he was still living in Upper Stewiacke since his name appears on the poll tax list. In 1792, Lame Sam sold his grant to William Cox and moved back to Truro where he lived at Salmon River. After the death of his first wife, Margaret, Lame Sam married second, 18 April 1810, NANCY CLAYTON and shortly thereafter removed to the St. Mary’s River, Guysborough County, and lived near The Forks which in the 1830s became known as Glenelg in honour of Lord Glenelg, Secretary of State for the Colonies.
