Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born to a noble family in Orvieto, Vincenzo Moretti received his education at the local Jesuit college and diocesan seminary, later moving to the Collegio Romano of Rome, earning doctorates in utroque iure in both canon and civil laws. Ordained priest on October 22, 1838, he was named canon theologian of the cathedral chapter of his native city on October 18, 1845. Professor of Sacred Scriptures and ecclesiastical history at the local lyceum, prosynodal examiner and pro-vicar general of the archdiocese, Moretti was elected bishop of Comacchio on December 17, 1855, receiving his episcopal consecration on January 13 of the following year in Rome from Cardinal Costantino Patrizi Naro. Transferred to the see of Cesena on March 23, 1860, he was named assistant at the Pontifical Throne on September 18, 1863. Transferred to the see of Imola on March 27, 1867, he was promoted to the metropolitan see of Ravenna on October 27, 1871. Pope Pius IX created him cardinal priest in the consistory of December 28, 1877 with the title of Santa Sabina. Resigning pastoral government of his see on September 22, 1879, he lived his remaining months in Rome, ultimately passing away in Bologna in 1881. It was there that he was laid to rest at the local Certosa where a funerary monument, commissioned by Alfredo Tartarini and sculpted by Enrico Barbieri was erected in his memory in 1883.
