The family of Peggy Sames Harrison relates with deep sadness the end of her earthly life. Known for her natural beauty, sweet smile, and quick wit, Peggy died of natural causes related to aging at her home in Bryan, Texas, surrounded by the family who cared for her and loved her, and who are grateful for her life. She was 87 years old. Born Martha Margaret Sames in Laredo, Texas, Peggy, as she was always known, was the youngest of the four children of Harry Elias Sames and Margaret Sleeper Sames. On both sides, her parents represented early pioneers in Texas who had settled in San Antonio under the Mexican flag and in Waco shortly after the Civil War. She attended schools in Laredo and graduated from Saint Mary's Hall, San Antonio in 1945. She enrolled at the University of Texas in Austin, where she majored in Liberal Arts, played on the golf team, and was a member of the Phi Beta Phi Sorority. During this time she was honored by the invitation of the Order of the Alamo to represent Laredo as a Duchess during Fiesta in 1947. In 1948, Peggy married Frank Burton Tirey, Jr. of Waco. After completing their educations at UT, the young couple moved to Waco where Frank practiced law with his father and Peggy raised their three children. After Frank's untimely death in an automobile accident, Peggy married Richard H. Harrison, III, who had also been widowed, in 1971, and moved to Bryan, where she lovingly raised Dick's children and resided until her passing. Peggy was predeceased by her husbands, Frank Tirey and Dick Harrison; her parents; her brother and her two sisters, Harry Sames, Mary Sames, and Laura Sames Calohan; and by one son, Richard H. Harrison, IV. She is survived by her children, Martha Tirey Stearns, of Norman, OK, Alice Tirey Mitchell, of La Jolla, CA, Frank Graves Tirey, (Becky Thomson) of Houston, TX, and Becky Harrison Wood and Sam Harrison, both of Bryan. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Christopher Tirey, Frank and Josephine Mitchell, Elaine, Harrison, and Wilson Wood, and Kaitlin and Josh Harrison. In addition, she had 2 great-grandchildren in whom she was delighted. Her extended family tree includes nieces, nephews, and cousins in Laredo, Waco, Austin, Georgetown, Houston and San Antonio. Her life will be celebrated and her loss mourned by them all. Peggy was a life-long athlete and played tennis and golf. She was always proud to relate that her golf coach at UT had been the well-known and revered pro Harvey Pennick, of Little Red Book fame. She enjoyed bridge, entertaining and traveling, especially to La Jolla, California where she and Dick Harrison maintained a vacation home for many years. Peggy was a fun loving and considerate friend, a fond and forgiving parent, and a loyal, affectionate spouse. Above all things she valued her family ties, which she always sought to nurture, and peace and harmony, which she strove for throughout her life. A memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Friday, January 22, 2016 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Bryan. The family wishes to honor and thank Cindy Jones, Temicca McGruder, Pam Davenport and all the wonderful caretakers who tirelessly assisted and supported Peggy during her long decline. Donations in Peggy's memory can be made to St. Andrews, or to the charitable organization of choice.
