Phillip R. Simmons, 81, of Celo, passed away Friday, June 2, 2017, at Mission Hospitals Memorial Campus. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Arcemus and Edna Hoover Simmons, and the husband of Ruth Jones Simmons who died in 2013. He was also preceded in death by a sister: Barbara Jean Bowers. Phillip was a US Marine veteran, an avid golfer and loved his politics. He was a lifelong member of Celo United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his children: Patty Fisher and husband Kenneth of Linville Falls, Phillip Simmons, Jr. and wife Tammy of Spruce Pine, Sue Simmons, John Simmons and wife Susan, and Rebecca Hughes and husband Robert, all of Celo; grandchildren: Brian Fisher, Austin Simmons, Eric Simmons, Mitchell Simmons, Carter Simmons, Brooke Peterson, Dustin Hughes, Cynthia Hensley and Matthew Hughes; and 5 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Revs. Luther Carver and Ken Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Carroway Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
