Ballerina. Born Myra Yvonne Chouteau, she was the only child of Colonel Corbett Edward and Lucy Annette Chouteau. Chouteau was inspired to dance at the age of four after seeing a performance by Alexandra Danilova in Oklahoma City. She began studying at the School of American Ballet in New York at the age of twelve. In 1943, Danilova recommended her to Sergei Denham for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and at age fourteen she became the youngest dancer ever accepted. Her first solo performance was as Prayer in "Coppelia" in 1945. In 1947, she became the youngest member to be inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. Yvonne married dancer Miguel Terekhov in 1956 and together they founded the Oklahoma City Civic Ballet. In 1962 they established the first fully accredited dance department in the United States at the University of Oklahoma. She is portrayed in the mural "Flight of Spirit" in the Oklahoma Capitol Rotunda and in the sculpture "The Five Moons" in the garden of the Tulsa Historical Society. When the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian opened in 2004, she was honored with the inaugural National Cultural Treasures Award for her contribution to the nation's cultural heritage. She died after a long illness.
