She was born March 1, 1928, in Bethera, SC, a daughter of Joseph Perry Legare and Isabelle Lougenia Morris Legare. She was a 1947 graduate of Berkeley High School and a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church in Huger.
A talented, self-taught pianist, she loved music, everything from country to gospel to jazz to classical. She also enjoyed crocheting, cooking, gardening, going to church, and spending time with family. “Miss Mattie” never met a stranger. In her later years, when mostly homebound, she delighted in the visits she had by various church members who brought her meals and fellowship. She so looked forward to those visits and enjoyed sharing her faith with others. She loved deeply, lived passionately, and always saw the good in everyone.
She was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Just, and was the widow of Joseph Drake Gaskins.
Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Teal of Bethera, and Patti Just Long of Awendaw; two sons, Michael Just of Shulerville, and Joseph Just of Russellville; two sisters, Louise Gaskins of Mt. Pleasant, and Faye Litchfield of Moncks Corner; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 21 at 3pm at Hopewell Baptist Church in Huger, SC, and burial will be on Saturday, March 5 at 2pm at Bethel Baptist Church in Bethera, SC.
