Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as the Sergeant Major of the 14th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 67th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, then finally Colonel and commander of the 184th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on February 27, 1867. He was the great-grandfather and namesake of 20th Century American historian Henry Steele Commager.
