Job and Emeline Bowman married in 1854.
Job was farming in Illinois when he married Mary Brackett on November 30, 1871. The family moved back to Essex Junction, Vermont in 1881.
The Burlington Weekly Free Press (Burlington, Vermont) on May 12, 1904 reported that Job contracted pneumonia after falling in a steam in one of his pastures. "In his death the community loses one whose many years were a living example to young and old of all that industry, courage, and Christian integrity stand for. A man of great decision and strong character he was unswerving in his ideas and his good judgment was sought and used in many different directions. Mr. Bates was one of the selectmen of the town for some time."
Job also served his town as lister and grand juror.
