Canadian Statesman. He served as the 11th Premier of Alberta from November 1, 1985 to December 13, 1992. After playing basketball and football at Western University in London, Ontario, he played the position of quarterback for the Edmonton Eskimoes of the Canadian Football League. While with the Eskimoes, he passed for more than eight thousand yards during a ten year career and won two Grey Cup championships. After leaving football, he went first into business and then politics, serving in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta until 1979. After a brief stint back in the business world, he became the Alberta Progressive Conservative party leader in 1985 and then was appointed Premier of Alberta later in the same year. He served in this position until 1992 and governed the region during its worst economic downturn in history. He was severely criticized for running huge deficits during his administration. After leaving office in 1992, he stayed out of the public spotlight. He became an officer of the Order of Canada in 1998. His football career was recognized in 1992 as he was placed on the Edmonton Eskimoes' Wall of Honor.
