US Congressman. Recognizing the need for standardized stage equipment while working as a stagehand, he went into the business of manufacturing theatrical rigging, inventing and improving many now common pieces of equipment, including automatic fire curtains. Clancy later expanded into manufacturing other specialty hardware and also became active in banking. He was a well known civic activist, including service on the state College of Forestry's Board of Trustees and the Central New York State Park Commission. In 1912 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat and served one term. During World War I he was a member of the Governor's Public Safety Committee and was also appointed by the War Production Board to oversee Central New York factories that stamped and forged metal parts and equipment for military use. JR Clancy Company continues to supply stage equipment and services to the entertainment industry.
