Jazz Musician. Colloquially known as NHØP he is considered one of the most outstanding bass-players of our time and an innovator of the modern bass-playing of jazz. He began playing the bass at an early age, and during the 1960s, right from his early teens, he was a house-musician at the legendary Jazzhouse Montmartre in Copenhagen where he accompanied a large number of international musicians such as Bud Powell, Coleman Hawkins, Johnny Griffin, Ben Webster, Stan Getz and Stephan Grapelli just to mention a few. His collaboration with the pianist Kenny Drew won him popular attention. In 1970 he began a lifelong collaboration with the pianist Oscar Peterson. He toured almost constantly in most parts of the world, from the early 1990s often with his own trio. His albums include "Jaywalkin'" (1976), "Trio 1-2" (1977), "The Eternal Traveller" (1984) "Uncharted Land" (1992) and "This Is All I Ask" (1998) besides several hundreds of recordings where he played with some of the greatest names in Jazz. He was voted the Danish Jazz Musician of the Year 1964, the World's Best Bass-player in "Melody Maker" in 1977 and in "Down Beat" in 1981. Awarded the Nordic Council's Music Prize in 1990 and the Ben Webster Prize in 1999. He died at his home at Ishøj and was buried in his native village of Osted.
