Charley Ross Mayfield

August 28, 1924 - March 3, 2016

Charley Ross Mayfield took his place in heaven after living an extraordinary life of service to his family, community and church.

Charley was born to Emmadore and John Mayfield in West Virginia on August 28, 1924. Charley Ross served in World War II. After the war, he married Marilynn Ardeth Foskuhl on November 27, 1948. He retired from Wright Patterson Air Force Base after 37 years of dedicated service on Feb. 8, 1980. Charley started at Wright Patterson as a tour guide and registration agent for visitors. He was then given the opportunity to go to the Ford school for machinists for four years. That training gave him the credentials to work as a tool and die maker for the remainder of his career at Wright Pat. For over 20 years, he proudly volunteered as a bus driver for the Xenia Golden Age Senior Citizen Center from the time he retired until April 20, 2011. He also served many roles at the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Xenia. He served many years in one of his favorite roles as Sunday school teacher. Charley and Marilynn spent many years serving at Hospitality Nursing Home when his mother Emmadore was a resident. Charley was well known for his love to play card games. The Xenia Senior Citizens Center will always have a place for him in their card games. He also loved to be the official photographer of the festivities at the Senior Center.

Charley’s greatest achievement was raising his two sons, Kenneth and David. “They both made a life for themselves, got an education, got married, had good careers and are good fathers.”

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his 4 brothers and a sister.

Charley Ross is survived by his wife Marilynn and his children: Kenneth Mayfield and wife Michele, David Mayfield and wife Jeanmarie; grandchildren Danielle, Kelsey and Ross; great-grandson Billy; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Fred Foskuhl and wife Marilyn and their children, Gary, Susan and Steve, who were all very helpful when Charley and Marilynn needed their loving care.

Graveside services will be held 11 AM Tuesday, March 8th at Valley View Memorial Gardens with Rev. Thomas E. Hite officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Xenia Adult Recreation Center or to the Evangelical United Methodist Church in his memory.

Additional services to celebrate Charley Ross’ life will take place in early April 2016.

My soul finds rest in God alone, my salvation comes from him. – Psalm 62.1
