Swedish prince. He was Prince of Sweden of the Vasa Dynasty and Duke of East Gothland and additional areas, the only one of the four adult sons of King Gustav I Vasa who did not become King. He had the power and authority to run his extensive duchy pretty independently, but has been described as mentally incompetent as of 1563. His brothers King John III and Duke Carl (IX) then managed his estates. He continued to reside at Vadstena Castle which was rebuilt for him. Life for the nuns at nearby Vadstena Abbey had become difficult because of the Protestant Reformation which his father had brought to Sweden. A papal nuncio accused him of abducting and murdering several women, stories to which modern historians are skeptical. His musical talent was well known and there are several ballads and accounts of eccentric behavior at the castle. One of them had him jumping out of a window to join a mermaid he'd seen in the moat. His funeral procession was extravagant and his monument is magnificent. Unmarried, he did have at least three daughters by concubines.
