Swedish princess. She was originally Princess of Sweden in the Vasa Dynasty as the fourth daughter of King Gustav I and Queen Margaret. When married after 1568, as the consort of a German duke, she also was Duchess of Saxe-Lauenburg. Theirs was a double wedding with that of her half-brother King Eric XIV to his mistress, which caused him to lose his throne a year later. Her husband has been described as a raw and uncouth cad who caused trouble all over. When he had been behind bars in Sweden for a time and went to leave for home, she refused to go with him. Her only surviving son also stayed and they lived under less-than-luxurious circumstances in a palace west of Stockholm. After he was killed in a firearms accident in 1597 and her husband died in a German prison in 1603, she lived on for another eight years and left a substantial amount of the interesting correspondence she had had with her siblings, which is now in the National Archives of Sweden.
