19th Premier of Prince Edward Island. A member of the Liberal Party, he served in this position from January 1936 until May 1943. After completing his early education, he received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts Degrees from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He then attended Corpus Christi College, Oxford, England, as a Rhodes Scholar and received a Master of Arts Degree in 1922. After returning to Prince Edward Island, he studied law under former Prince Edward Island Premier Albert C. Saunders. In 1930 he entered politics by running for a seat in the Prince Edward Island Legislative Assembly. Although he lost, he was named the province's Attorney General. The following year, he was elected to the Legislature from the 1st Prince district. In January 1936 he became Premier following the death of Walter Lea. During his tenure, his government organized the provincial police, established the Prince Edward Island National Park, and passed legislation on public service. In May 1943 he resigned his position and legislative seat to become Chief Justice of the Prince Edward Island Supreme Court, remaining there until 1970, after which he was appointed Chief Commissioner of the Newly-established Foreign Claims Commission at Ottawa, Ontario. While a member on the Board of Governors of Dalhousie University and St. Dunstan's University, he received an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from each. He also served as Chancellor of the University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown. In 1973 he was honored with the Companion of the Order of Canada. During his life, he was active in the sport of curling, having been president of several curling associations, and in 1974 he was inducted into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame. He died at the age of 83. His son, Alexander Bradshaw Campbell, would become the 23rd Premier of Prince Edward Island, serving from July 1966 until September 1978.
