"Nannie" was the oldest of 3 children born to Richard "Dick" Hay of Tennessee and Maranda Hay of North Carolina.

Nannie was named in honor of her paternal grandmother (or aunt), Nancy Hay, who was born in Virginia around 1820. Nancy, Benjamin, Richard and Lucy Hay lived together in 1860 in Obion County, Tennessee and were early pioneers in the area.

Nannie's father, Richard, was a farmer. He suffered from a significant heart ailment by 1880. Both of her parents died sometime between 1880 and 1900.

Nannie married Thaddeus Meyer "Thad" Carson on 26 Oct 1887 in Obion County. They were the parents of 8 children.

Thad, also known as Morris/Maurice on some records, was born on 20 Apr 1859 in Pennsylvania, and was the son of John Carson and Ann Eliza Grant. Thad's family attended St. Stephen's Church in Sewickley, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

Thad lived in Sewickley with his mother and 2 younger siblings, Emma M. Carson and Jacob B. Carson, until sometime after 1859. Thad's brother and sister eventually moved to Youngstown, Ohio.

Nannie and Thad's first child was born in Clinton County, Kentucky in January of 1889. Thad's older son, Allen, from a previous marriage, was also born in Kentucky.

The Carsons moved to Obion County, Tennessee in 1890 or 1891. The next 5 of their children were born there.

Thad reported his occupation as a stationary engineer at the turn of the century. Evidence suggests that the family was involved in cotton farming.

The family moved north around 1902. Their youngest child, Edith, was born in Missouri in August of 1903.

By 1905, the Carsons moved to East St. Louis, St. Clair County, Illinois. Thad worked for a street car company.

He died in late 1905 or early 1906.

Children from first marriage: 1 step-son, 4 daughters, 3 sons.

Nannie stayed in East St. Louis until at least 1907, but moved back to Obion County by 1910. She and her 3 youngest children lived there with a widowed aunt, Lucie Stanfield. Nannie supported her children by doing laundry work.

She married Spencer Durkin Terry on 22 Jul 1914 in Lake County, Tennessee. He was a widower and the father of 3 children from his 1881 marriage to Mahala Ermon Benham. His first wife died in January of 1914. Only 2 of his children were living by the time Nannie married Spencer.

He was a farmer, and they lived in Obion County.

Spencer died of pneumonia on 18 Jan 1923 at the age of 66. His 38-year-old daughter, Vannie, passed away the following day; Spencer's 35-year-old son, Jessie, died 8 days after that.

Children from second marriage: 1 step-daughter, 1 step-son.

Nannie lived until 1948. She died at her home of heart failure, not long after suffering a broken pelvis. At the time of her death, she was 81 years, 2 months and 24 days old.

She was buried on 16 Nov 1948.
