Actor. Stuntman. He was best known as a stunt double for Oliver Hardy and Charles Laughton. Charles Joseph Phillips was born in Syracuse, New York, on October 30, 1903. He was the oldest child of Michael J. Phillips and Minnie M. Baker. He appeared in at least 42 films (mostly uncredited) from 1926 to 1955. He was Oliver Hardy’s stunt double in the Laurel & Hardy films,”Our Relations”(1936), “Bohemian Girl”(1936), “Block-Heads”(1938), “Swiss Miss”(1938), “Saps At Sea”(1940), and “A Chump at Oxford”(1940). Among his appearances in the Three Stooges shorts were: “Uncivil Warriors”(1935) as Buttz’s aide, “Movie Maniacs”(1936) as assistant cameraman, “Slippery Silks”(1936) as policeman, “Back to the Woods”(1937) as Indian, “Playing the Ponies”(1937) as Butler, “Mutts To You”(1938) as Man with hose, “A Ducking They Did Go”(1939) as Cop hit by melon, “From Nurse To Worse”(1940) as male nurse, “So Long Mr. Chumps”(1941) as Officer handcuffed to Louie, “Matri-Phony”(1942) as Guard, and “Crash Goes the Hash”(1944) as a bruised newshawk. Among his other film appearances were: “The General”(1926), “Gobs of Trouble”(1935), “Oh, My Nerves”(1935), “Dick Tracy”(1937) as reporter, “Dick Tracy Returns”(1938) as Snakey, “Dick Tracy’s G-Men”(1939) as Thug on barge, “Dick Tracy vs. Crime Inc.”(1941) as Plant heavy, “The Naughty Nineties”(1945) as croupier, “The Good Bad Egg”(1947) as Member of the Board of Directors, The Bowery Boys,”Hard-Boiled Mahoney”(1947), “Storm Warning”(1951) as bus driver, “The Twonky”(1953), “Spies and Guys”(1953) as Private, and “The Shrike”(1955). He is listed in “Who Was Who On Screen” First edition (1974), Second edition (1977) and Third edition (1983). Charlie Phillips died at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, Los Angeles, California, on May 25, 1958. He was 54.
