Earl Wesley Payton's parents were Earl Clifford Payton and Emma Elizabeth Roberson. He was born in Missouri, probably in Pulaski County, where the family were recorded in Dixon, Pulaski County, Missouri, in the 1920 census. He enlisted in the US Army on August 15, 1944, at Jefferson Barracks in St Louis, Missouri. In about 1936 he was married to Dorothy V. Loveland, his first wife, with whom he had three children. On September 20, 1947, in Springfield, Missouri, he married his second wife Jereleine C. Wilson, with whom he had five children, two living to adulthood. After the second marriage he and his wife moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, where their first two children were born. In 1950-51, the family moved to Los Angeles. Among other places, he worked at the Santa Anita racetrack. His death was due to malignant hypertension and renal failure.
