Lena Cora West was born in Luling, Texas to Samuel Gerren West and Liddie Viola Smith, one of eight children to come from that union of marriage. Many of them died very young. Lena survived.

She married John Robert "Johnnie" O'Bryant Jr. in 1929 and had one child, a daughter, O'Willa Fay O'Bryant.

According to her daughter, Lena never worked, instead she loved to go out dancing with husband Johnnie, frequently getting quite drunk in the process. She made no bones about it, she was an admitted life long alcoholic. That's what she did best and was proud of it. She also loved to chain smoke Camel non filter cigarettes. This habit and heavy alcohol use most likely lead to her relatively early death from lung cancer at 51.

Lena loved the good life provided by her husband and she supported him one hundred percent. He was her life and she dedicated it to him. He showered her with the finest clothes, diamonds and sapphires, Cadillacs and a beautiful home in Corpus Christi. Even in death he made sure Lena had a beautiful crypt at the Seaside Memorial Mausoleum, to be at his side for all of eternity.
