John Robert "Johnnie" O'Bryant Jr. was the son of John Robert O'Bryant Sr. and Charlotte Augusta Thielepape.

As a young boy Johnnie learned the value of hard work. Along with his two sisters and three brothers they farmed the land and worked in the general store operated by their parents on Hopkins Street in San Marcos. Cows, chickens, pigs, and horses had to be cared for. The store had to be restocked often. It was a hard life for a young child with little time for play, but it would pay off.

At a young age Johnnie learned the art of baking pastries. He became so good at it a store was opened in Victoria, Texas. He sold donuts and other sweet chocolate covered goodies. He kept very good records of his recipes for various pastries. At some point he was offered a large sum of money by an unknown person for all of his recipes. He took the offer and invested the money in his soon to be successful concrete construction company.

As a young man Johnnie became active in the construction business in Central and South Texas. In Corpus Christi he formed a concrete businesss located off Wooldridge Road and was involved in pouring hundreds of slabs for homes and businesses all over Corpus.

He did very well investing in the oil business in the early 1960's after inheriting and investing a $1,000,000 insurance policy upon the death of his wife, Lena Cora West. Fortune soon turned to big losses as the oil market fluctuated. Johnnie lost a big part of his fortune very fast.

He was great with his hands, carving a small boat out of wood, naming it after his Grand Daughter, the "Becky Ann". He built two homes in Corpus, one at the corner of Santa Fe and Aberdeen, the other on Meadowbrook Drive.

Johnnie had a green thumb. He built three greenhouses on the property his concrete business was on. In these greenhouses he oversaw the growing of number one quality greenhouse tomatoes using a special formula developed by Dr. Sheldrake of Houston, Texas. His daughter O'Willa Fay O'Bryant Bartee and wife Armandina Sanchez O'Bryant were instrumental in making this operation a success. It was all but lost to Hurricane Celia in 1970.

In retirement he bought a trailer near the Cayo Del Oso and lived there with his third wife Delores until his death.

He was three times married, first to Lena Cora West of Luling Texas, second to Armandina Sanchez of Mexico, and third to Delores Ledbetter.

He had two daughters, O'Willa Fay O'Bryant and another who remains unknown at this time.

Johnnie was active in the Masonic Lodge, attaining the 32nd Degree of the Scottish Rite.
