American Folk Figure. Ana Cumpanas, later known as Anna Sage, is best known for collaborating with the FBI to apprehend her lover, gangster John Dillinger. She was born Ana Persida Cumpanas in the village of Lunga, part of the commune of Comlosu Mare near Timisoara, Romania. She married Mihai Ciolac at the age of 20 in 1909. They had a son Steve before immigrating to America in 1914. The family settled in Chicago where she divorced Mihai. She worked as a prostitute, eventually owning brothels on Halstead Street and other locations. Her second marriage was to Romanian immigrant Alexandru Suciu, who anglicized his name to Alexander Sage. She then became known as Anna Sage. She divorced Alexandru in 1932, after which she met and had a love affair with John Dillinger, a notorious criminal wanted for his bank robberies and the assassination of several police officers. Her activities came to the attention of the authorities, who decided to deport her back to Romania. She made a deal with FBI agent Melvin Purvis to help entrap Dillinger in return for a reward and an agreement that the deportation would be reconsidered. Wearing a red dress, she pointed out Dillinger who was killed by federal agents at Chicago's Biograph Theater on July 22, 1934. Anna reportedly received only half of her reward, and the deportation went ahead. In January 1936 at the age of 47 she returned to Romania's Banat area where she grew up. She had an active social life for several years, but her money didn't last and she died in poverty in Timisoara. Her son Steve remained in America, where he defended the United States in World War Two. Her life story became the subject of novels, one of which is "Woman in Red" by Adriana Babeti. Several movies have been made portraying her life, including one in Romania titled "Femeia in Rosu", (Woman in Red). The most recent movie of her life story was "Public Enemies" in 2009 with Johnny Depp as John Dillinger, Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis, and Branka Katic as Anna Sage. There are supposedly two theories in Romania about Anna's death, that she was killed by Dillinger's men or by the FBI. It was reported that she died of cirrhosis of the liver.
