For five seasons (1942, 1944 to 1946 and 1953), he played at the catcher, shortstop and third baseman positions with the Boston Braves, Brooklyn Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates. Born Michael Joseph Sandlock, he marked his Major League debut with the Braves on September 19, 1942 and recorded a single in his only plate appearance that season. Following service with the United States Military during World War II, he secured the starting catcher position with Brooklyn (1945) and produced a career-high 55 hits, with a .282 batting average in 80 games-played. In 1953, he served primarily as the starting catcher with the Pirates and recorded 43 hits in 64 games-played. At the time of his death, he was recognized as the oldest living former Major League player.
