Lieutenant Colonel William W. Wood, U.S. Army of Panama City, FL, was killed in action when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in Baghdad. He was posthumously promoted to Colonel.

COL Wood was directing security operations in response to the detonation of an IED. While supervising the task, a second IED exploded nearby. William was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 184th Regiment from Modesto, CA. The unit was assigned to work with Hawaii National Guard personnel from August 2004 until sometime in the Spring of 2005.

COL Wood is the son of LTC (Ret) Jimmy L. and Frances M. Wood. William attended Everitt Middle School and graduated from Rutherford High School in 1979. He attended Florida State University where he was a member of the Florida Epsilon chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon, an ROTC cadet, and upon graduation was commissioned an Infantry Officer in the United States Army.

Wood was a decorated combat Infantry leader who loved being a Soldier, the outdoors, Boy Scouts, golf, and riding quarter horses. COL Wood served in every leadership, operations and command position from platoon leader with C Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment at Fort Benning in 1984 to Deputy Brigade Commander, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. Wood was instrumental in the Brigade's reorganization process and preparations for combat. COL Wood is survived by his wife, Nanci Kalyn Wood and their daughter Rachel Katlyn Wood of Fort Stewart; brothers COL (ret.) Don Hansen, James Wood, Tony Wood and sister Mary Soule. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday at the Hinesville First United Methodist Church conducted by Army Chaplain (CPT) Walter Marshall.
