32nd Chile President. Born Patricio Aylwin Azocar, he served as President of Chile from March 11, 1990 to March 11, 1994. After attending the law school of the University of Chile, he became a lawyer. He also served as an university professor at throughout his early adult life. He became involved in politics in 1945 when he joined the Falange Nacional, which later became the Christian Democratic Party. He rose through the ranks of the party until becoming party president. In 1965 he was elected to the National Congress as a senator and six years later, became the president of the Senate. During the administration of Salvador Allende, he led the democratic opposition and tried to find a peaceful solution to the crisis that erupted in 1973. A week before the Chilean military coup of 1973, he signed a congressional act asking the military "to help reestablish the rule of law". He stayed in the leadership of the Christian Democratic party throughout the rule of General Augusto Pinochet. In 1989, after the citizens of Chile voted to end military rule, he was elected president. During his term in office, which lasted until 1994, the economy boomed and a commission to investigate human rights abuses by the previous regime was set up. His "pragmatic but cautious hand" helped guide Chile to democracy after years of military dictatorship. After leaving office, he continued working in the international political field.
