Princess of Sweden. Countess Consort of the Palatinate-Veldenz. Of the Vasa Dynasty, she was a daughter of Sweden's King Gustav I, she and her sisters were considered beautiful by foreign ambassadors attending the coronation of her brother (Eric XIV) in 1561. The following year, young Count Palatine George John of Veldenz-Lautereck-Lützelstein arrived in Stockholm and asked for her hand. She married him later that year, and though he was thought to be "an odd head" and very wasteful, the marriage was considered a happy one. With her dowry quickly spent and practical problems always piling up, Anne gave birth to twelve children, of whom seven were brought up to maturity. When the Count died in 1592 he left his widow with children, their little nation and big debts. She was more careful with the finances and paid off as much as she could during the rest of her lifetime. Her husband had unwisely divided his county between their sons leading to struggles between them, which Anne was able to alleviate, allegedly by being firm and loving at the same time. She died at 65 at with a legacy of being well respected by her subjects and others.
