Born in Loretville, Quebec, which was an older city that has now been amalgamated with Quebec City. It is now located within the Borough of La Haute-Saint-Charles.

"Francis Martell
Farmer; P.O. Clyde; came to Wisconsin in 1836, locating in the town of Ridgeway, Iowa Co., where for nine years he engaged in milling in Hickcox's flouring mills, the first in the southwestern portion of Wisconsin; in 1850, he went to California, engaged in mining in and around Placerville nearly three years; then returned to this county, settling in the town of Clyde shortly afterward, which has been his home since, and where he has been interested in farming and milling to an extent, since 1853; in 1878, he sold his milling interests, but still continues farming, owning about 350 acres of land; he was born near Montreal, Canada, in 1814, and there remained until his coming to Wisconsin. ... Mr. Martell kept the first inn in the town of Ridgeway; it was located on the Military road, between Dodgeville and Blue Mounds, which was considerably traveled in those days."
